Abstract

As today¡¯s society changes with the high trend of individualization and professionalization, the importance of high quality of leadership has increased in order to achieve a goal of an organization. As an organization that requires strong obeyance, the military society has a goal of winning at the combat with one movement. Military hospitals are the organizations that require compelete obeyance as well as efficient leadership in order to provide their clients with good medical services. Therefore leadership of head nurses and Nursing directors in the military hospitals is essential to bring about staff nurses¡¯ self realization through motivation and job satisfaction, taking advantage of sound surrounding which is able to operate her staff nurses function efficiently. With staff nurses¡¯ occupational satisfaction, the clients in the military hospitals can receive the high quality care and the organizational goal of military hospitals can be achieved. This study was conducted to examine leadership styles perceived by the staff nurses in the military hospitals and to examine the relationship between leadership styles and job satisfaction. The participants were 380 nurses who worked at the military hospitals. The data were collected from May 21 to June 7 in 2007 through self-report, and the results are as follows. 1. The participants perceived transactional leadership more, and the perceived transactional leadership were listed in the order of intellectual stimulation, individual consideration, and Carisma. The results of this study were similar to those on the previous studies with civilian nurses. 2. Nursing officers¡¯s job satisfaction was highest in the ¡¯interaction¡¯ criteria, and others are ¡¯professional level¡¯, ¡¯works¡¯, ¡¯autonomy¡¯, ¡¯administration¡¯, and payment in the order. 3. Leadership styles were showed the difference in marital status and service type, but job satisfaction were effected by all the criteria. 4. Transactional relationship showed higher relationship with job satisfaction than situational leadership did. In conclusion, transactional leadership effects on job satisfaction and is required for developing the professional and achieving the goal of organization in rapidly changing health care environment. This study may contribute to building a constructive health care environment for nursing managers as well as staff nurses.
